Ethical Guidelines in Community-Based Research: A Visual Response

I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with a research team from University College Cork (UCC) to create a visual retrospective of feedback gathered during a workshop on developing ethical guidelines for community-based research, particularly in the areas of participatory and arts-based methods.

The workshop was a part of UCC Futures – Collective Social Futures, Future Humanities and Institute of Social Science in the 21st Century (ISS21) initiative. It brought together arts and community organisations and UCC colleagues to explore the complexities and nuances of the ethics of participatory, creative and socially engaged research.

My task was to distill the rich, diverse feedback from the workshop into an illustration that captured the collective insights and experiences shared. This visual representation serves not only as a reflection of the workshop but also as a tool for ongoing dialogue and development in the field of ethical community-based research.

“It was wonderful to work with Becky. She immediately understood our needs for an illustration created to communicate with our participants about what the collective achieved in the workshop. Her illustration is beautiful and conveys empathy, inclusivity and understanding – just what we needed to communicate work to date and to bring our community-based research ethics forward to the next level of work needed with our partners”  – Maggie, Yvon, Elaine, Siobhan, Ashling (Research Team)
